Jeff Smith’s career reflects his two great passions in life: children’s education and beach volleyball. Jeff started playing beach volleyball in high school in Texas at any facility that resembled a beach court. He went on to play indoor club volleyball at Stephen F. Austin State University. In 1997 he packed up his car and moved to San Diego to pursue his dreams of playing on the AVP against the best players in the world.
Jeff became AAA CBVA rated and competed in over 50 AVP events. On his journey to support his dreams, he went into education and finished his M Ed. in 2003. Jeff’s indoor resume has led him to assistant coaching positions at University of Chicago, Christian Heritage College, and the varsity coach at Serra High School. During these years, Jeff established a coaching practice spanning all levels – from middle school to high school to university and fellow beach volleyball professionals.
In 2008, Jeff decided to take the two passions that he knows best, education and beach volleyball and established 692 Beach Volleyball Club in San Diego. His vision was to develop a holistic educational approach to the sport where girls could truly “own the game” as they matured and developed combining mental and physical discipline with an awareness of fitness and self-accountability. Under his direction, 692 is helping girls reach their dreams by earning beach scholarships in college. In the 10 year span, 692 has placed 40 girls into the NCAA, and has over 1500 athletes participate in the program. He credits 15 years of competition on the beach, a background in education and coaching at all levels to his formula of success.
In 2013, Jeff founded Beach Volleyball Clubs of America (BVCA) and was created in order to form a community and a support system for Beach Volleyball Clubs across America. BVCA is dedicated to grow the game and establish a culture that promotes and protect athletes, improves programs and clubs work together as a group to overcome obstacles and reach common goals. In July 2013, BVCA held the first National Club Championship in Huntington Beach with over 20 beach clubs from across the nation and 130 teams. In 2018, 80 beach clubs and 515 teams competed in the BVCA National Championships.
Jeff is also on the Board of the Junior Volleyball Association (JVA)
